Distributed situation awareness in road transport: theory, measurement, and application to intersection design

Advances in simulation and vehicle instrumentation capabilities have pushed the boundaries in terms of how important road-safety-related concepts can be studied.

In the road-safety context, advances in vehicle instrumentation and driving simulation now permit concepts to be studied naturally in their real-world context, following which interventions designed to enhance performance and safety can be safely, reliably and validly tested through advanced simulation.

Combing these advanced research platforms in this manner supports a greater understanding of key road safety concepts, whilst also affording the opportunity to design and test new interventions based on this understanding.
