Joseph Augustus Seiss (1823-1904) was an American theologian and author.

By the help of a few Lutheran clergymen, he entered Pennsylvania college, Gettysburg, in 1839 and finished his theological course in private.

He was licensed to preach by the synod of Virginia in 1842, and in 1844 he was ordained to the Lutheran ministry.

After holding pastorates in Virginia and Maryland he was called to St.

John's English Lutheran church, Philadelphia, in 1858.

His publications number more than a hundred and some of them have been republished in England and translated into other languages.

His works include: The Apocalypse: A Series of Special Lectures on the Revelation of Jesus Christ (1865), A Miracle in Stone; or, The Great Pyramid of Egypt (1877), Voices From Babylon; or, The Records of Daniel the Prophet (1879) and Luther and the Reformation: The Life- Springs of Our Liberties (1883).
