Endocrine oncology is a field which is expanding rapidly as a result of the explosion of molecular biological research in this area and the advances in diagnosis made possible by the advent of CT, MRI and angiography.

It is a large part of endocrine practice: many of the tumours are non-malignant, but have endocrine effects (eg. acromegaly) through hormone secretion. Even the jobbing endocrinologist outside an academic or referral centre could expect 80% of their work to involve endocrine oncology.

The oncologist, on the other hand, is only likely to see endocrine reproductive, primarily gynaecological problems, about 30% of the workload.
