Dialysis-related amyloidosis is a freequent complication encountered in patients receiving long-term haemodialysis.

This book presents evidence on the possible role of beta2-microglobulin modified with advanced glycation end products (AGE) in the pathogenesis of the disease.

The first of the three sections investigates the structure of AGE-modified protein, its formation mechanisms and its biological activity.

The book reveals that AGE-modified beta2-microglobulin has a chemotactic effect on monocytes, and stimulates macrophages to secrete interleuken 1beta, interleuken 6 and TNFalpha.

In other sections, the factors causing dialysis related amyloidosis are examined and the effectiveness of various haemo-purification methods in alleviating osteoarthropathy are assessed.
