This book clarifies present concepts of physical and biochemical mechanisms underlying neuronal injury and cell death following ischerria and traumatic injury and neurodegenerative disorders.

It defines clinical syndromes that may be amellorated by neuroprotective agents and describes proposed mechanisms, therapeutic actions, toxicity and clinical application of the various agents currently under study.

The conference also brings attention to new classes of agents, including endogenous neuroprotectants, which have shown promise.

Finally, it reports upon new clinical trials and suggests refinements for such trials that may better define the role of neuroprotective agents in clinical practice; it also identifies safety assessment issues and future research directions.
