The Germany of 1862-1935 has known every array of nationalism, from the Jacobin variety through humanitarian nationalism and passionate Hitlerite super-nationalism.

It is our purpose to clarify this background, to show on what foundation modern integral nationalism rests.

The task of selecting the most important elements from this distorted picture is an extremely difficult one, but the attempt, at least, must be made."
