This four volume collection of selected works examines the political, social and economic aspects of the interaction between Chinese society and the natural environment from past to present as well as future challenges.

Volume 1 and 2 are dedicated to China's environmental history and the tremendous environmental challenges of today's emerging economy, the second part (Volume 3-4) focuses on society's response to environmental degradation and climate change.
