The British Library Manuscript Collections have holdings, which include manuscripts of all types and all periods, from some of the earliest extant examples of written recorded knowledge to contemporary works.

This text is the chief guide to accessions, giving a detailed record of all manuscripts acquired by the library, and formerly by the British Museum, since the foundation of the Museum in 1756.

This volume is the first in a new series of catalogues produced on an automated system, which will allow future quinquennial cumulations to be published with minimal delay after the five-year period in question.

The catalogue should be a useful resource for anyone using western manuscripts in the course of their research.
