Dr. Marilla Svinicki has been the Editor-in-Chief for New Directions for Teaching and Learning since the early 1990s. As of January 2010, Dr. Catherine Wehlburg has taken this position. To mark the transition, this issue focuses on the progress of teaching and learning in higher education with regard to some important topics that have shaped it during the life of New Directions for Teaching and Learning. This jointly edited issue is based on a series of landmark developments in the last thirty years. This issue provides an overview of where these important topics came from, where they are presently, and where they are likely to go in the future. Through this, there is an opportunity to trace the evolution of some of today's most important developments in teaching and learning.

This is the 123rd volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report series New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.
