Birmingham during the Great War has been described as Britain's pre-eminent centre of manufacturing industries, its factories and workshops produced arms, ammunition, shells and components of all sorts making it a powerhouse for the War Effort.

The men of Birmingham formed many battalions of the Warwickshire Regiment and the city became a major medical centre giving over public and private buildings to become military hospitals.

The suburbs accommodated army camps and even an RFC aerodrome for pilot training.
