Compiled from York Libraries and Archives' photographic website Imagine York, this absorbing collection offers a glimpse into the lives of some of the people who shaped the history and character of this great city in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Images range from those of people laughing at a gala or enjoying a day out at the races, to pictures of families fighting to make the best of life in the face of adversity.

The emphasis throughout is on ordinary people actually living - at work and at home, at peace and at war, in worship and celebration, during quiet moments of contemplation and at times of great excitement.
