Modifications: the Management of Change

Time and again, modifications cause loss of life, plant and product within the process industries.

The UK Health and Safety Executive's report into the fire at Hickson & Welch Ltd in 1992 underlines the message that change is hazardous, and emphasizes the importance of planning and assessing the risks of changing the use of chemical plant.

This message is just as valid for "soft" changes - materials, computers, staffing, organization - to process conditions. This package explains how to train staff to identify modifications and the hazards they pose.

By running courses based on this package, staff may be trained on site.

The package gives full guidance on how to make training sessions effective by making sure that trainees are fully involved. Each point made in the text is backed up by at least two case studies, making it easy for the trainer to make the staff understand the issues.

The package is designed to provoke discussions and highlight similarities between the examples shown and the trainees' own systems of work. This training package is based on "Hazards of Plant Modifications", supplied by ICI Plc.

The benefits of using it include the ability to benchmark, allowing users to compare their own systems with example procedures and guidelines from ICI and Glaxochem.

The trainer is able to choose the course level and content, back points up with case studies, and include on-site case studies for extra impact.
