"The Great Cultural Revolution" began in 1966, when Hou Shengtian, the eldest son of Hou Yonglu wrote the first letter home of this family while walking by Dazhai.

Later, there were fewer letters home after sons and daughters started their works.

In 2000, fixed telephone was installed, which resulted in even fewer letters.

When clearing up Hou Yonglu's belongings after he died, his sons and daughters found out more than a thousand letters kept by the father for decades, thus they selected some of them and compiled into the Home Letters of A Farmer, which reflects the process of how farmers moved into big cities by ways like joining the army and passing college entrance examination.
