Set in the year 0079 of the Universal Century, the programme chronicles the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

To try and counter the rebellion, the Earth Federation creates humanoid mobile suits known as the RX-78 Gundam.

Out of desperation, the suits are forced into battle commanded by untrained civilians and refugees, including young Amuro Ray (voice of Toru Furuya).
