Francis Horner is a key figure in early 19th century history.

Born in Scotland of humble origins he rose to prominence as an influential Whig MP, became parliament's premier economist, a contributor to the later years of the Scottish Enlightenment and the founder of Britain's leading literary review.

His unpublished correspondence with early 19th century "literati" and his political comment should reveal much about the intellectual and political history of Britain during the Napoleonic era.

The editors supply a full biography of Horner, explanatory notes and bibliography, relating his life to the leading economic, social, political and literary currents of his day.
