"Fundamentals of Medical Cell Biology" is a multi-volume compendium designed for the entering medical student who already has a rudimentary knowledge of cell biology.

It is meant for adoption as a core curriculum in medical schools, particularly in conjunction with a model of education such as that found at McMaster University in Canada.

The McMaster programme consists, by and large, of problem-based learning and small group teaching where the teacher plays the role of tutor or facilitator.

The combination of a sound programme in molecular and cell biology with a McMaster - like system in schools seeking fundamental reform is bound to allow medical education to grow apace and flourish.

It is the editor's opinion that integrative biology is the new medical profession and that ultimately the barriers between the basic science departments will disappear.

What may emerge instead is a Division of Medical Biology whose intellectual climate will aim to promote closer co-operation between pre-clinical and medical scientists and bring them more closely towards a partnership both in teaching and research.
