HIV and Infant Feeding Counselling : A Training Course - Director's Guide

See all formats and editions

Approximately 800,000 children under 15 years of age are newly infected with HIV every year.

Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV accounts for approximately 90 per cent of these infections.

Up to 20 per cent of infants born to HIV-infected mothers may acquire HIV through breastfeeding.

There is a need for infant feeding counsellors. In response to this need, this training course has been developed by The World Health Organization, the United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS and UNICEF.

It consists of 16 training sessions using a variety of teaching methods. Intended for use by trainers and course directors, this director's guide contains information that course directors need to plan and prepare for the course, including lists of the materials and equipment required, and copies of the forms that should be photocopied for the course.

It also describes the director's role during the training of trainers and the course itself.
