Some Considerations on the Stelae of Assur

Part of the ASSUR series

The publication of new texts has led to the identification of some of the eponyms mentioned in the stelae of Assur.

An analysis of the data results in a negative conclusion with regard to the possibility of arranging the stelae in groups characterized by internal chronological coherence.

The original sequence has been lost, and even within the same group there are stelae dated to disparate periods, even if they are all Middle Assyrian.

Possibly, a subdivision may be suggested between the stelae placed to the North, which may be rather late, and those placed to the South, which may be dated to the period of greatest power - but this differentiation might be accidental.
