See all formats and editions

A unique documentation on Malian society and an important testimony of the desire for emancipation and the enthusiasm of younger generations. Malick Sidibe (Soloba, 1936, Mali) is considered Africa's most important living photographer.

He lives and works in Bamako. In 2007 the Venice Art Biennale honoured him with the Golden Lion.

In 2003 he won the Hasselblad Prize, in 2008 the ICP Infinity Award, in 2009 the prize PhotoEspana - Baume & Mercier, and, in 2010, the World Press Photo of the Year in Arts and Entertainment. The book present his works, mostly unedited, from the sixties and seventies: from studio portraits in the purest African tradition, to the reportage works about nightlife in Bamako carried out during the first years of his country's independence. Text in English, Italian and French.
