For many years these waterways played a key role as one of the areas main transport lifelines, linking Lakeshore communities and supporting the development of local industries.

The arrival of the railway ushered in an era of mass tourism, despite resistance from the Lake Poets, and Coniston Water, Derwentwater, Ullswater and Windermere witnessed the development of a broad range of regular steamer services.
