Written in the reflective voice of sixteen year old Rachel Gabriel, the diary-like narrative reveals a thoughtful, sensitive spirit trying to stay calm at the center of a ferocious storm.

The story starts with her mother suddenly falling ill.

Rachel, close to GCSEs and to her starring role in the school performance of Macbeth, doesn't understand what's happening, and the adult world is puzzlingly reluctant to reveal the truth.

One of the GCSEs is Religious Education and the things that happen to Rachel reflect the miracles she reads about, whether it be feeding the sick in hospital, changing water to wine for her mother or seeing her little brother Baz draw a magic, healing serpent. When love turns to betrayal it's all Rachel can do to stay in control, at least of herself.

But then an unexpected friendship turns to something more and somehow she finds the strength not just to keep going but to achieve everything that's in her power to achieve and to face with dignity those things that aren't.
