Alex craves escape, a means to leave the life she has grown to hate. After winning the lottery, she decides to purchase an island hundreds of miles off the pacific coast. The entire process was designed to remain as anonymous as she could, only meeting with the key figures that would help her prepare and run the island after turning it into a dream resort. She sends out mass invites to her graduating high school class alumni, an all expense paid trip to be the resort's first guests before the official opening. But, as they settle into their vacation, thing begin to go astray. First, the banking system crumbles as the global stock market takes a free-fall after threats of war loom. Then the unthinkable occurs, mutually assured destruction after an EMP strike disrupts a submarine's failsafe, causing the launch of the first of many nuclear warheads. Meanwhile, Alex and her graduating class are stranded hundreds of miles away as they watch the world they once knew become a shadow. Tensions are high as people struggle to find themselves among the emotional wreckage. Things are not what they seem on the island as a man strives for Alex's attention, going so far as to kill to get it. Alex struggles with her past, her present, and her future as she begins to fall in love with Frank, a man she used to help tutor in high school who had just gotten a divorce. Will she survive the endless problems that no one could have predicted would occur, or will she fight her way to the top, clawing out her place in this new community of survivors? What will they do when they learn about her position on the island, will she be blamed or accepted? When everything hangs in the balance by tiny threads, can she help her people weave them together and give them strength again.
