Studying the history and survival of penny capitalism in Canada, this work seeks to demonstrate the importance of the concept of penny capitalism in the study of Canadian history.

It examines how penny capitalists and other small, self-employed producers affected - and were affected by - urban development, the growth and diversification of the economy, immigration, and regulatory legislation.

The book shows that the survival of penny capitalism eased the restructuring of the modern industrial economy.
