Plucked from his nest by a hawk, Scamper, a baby squirrel, escapes the death-grip of the raptor bird only to find himself lost and alone. Luck places him into the tender care of his new, adopted parent, Mother Nutworthy, a kind and experienced squirrel, who discovers that Scamper is very different from any squirrel she has ever seen. His color, size, shape, and sleeping habits are all wrong. Drowsy during the day and alert as soon as the sun sets, the insomniac Scamper ventures out into the forest night where he befriends Phinius B.

Phrog, a wise, old bullfrog who becomes Scampers nighttime guide and mentor. Their adventures teach Scamper to recognize the pleasures, as well as the dangers that lie in the nocturnal world of the forest. In the end, the tiny squirrel must face his worst fears in order to save his loved ones and, in the ordeal, Scamper discovers why he is different and who and what he is.
