See all formats and editions

The Elveden Estate in Suffolk is a fascinating country estate which has developed to become a modern, multifaceted rural business enterprise.

The estate's extraordinary ownership story begins with Admiral Keppel in 1768-86, before passing through the hands of Lord Albemarle, the Newton family and the India Office, which owned the estate for the enjoyment of Maharajah Duleep Singh, and most recently to the Guinness family in 1894.

Each owner has left his mark on the estate. The land at Elveden has been transformed from an arid, semi-natural wilderness to become a highly productive agricultural estate, combining farmland, forestry and unique lowland heathland.

Today an ethos of ecologically responsible conservation combines harmoniously with the estate's farming practices.

This book explores the history of the estate and charts the progress made at Elveden in becoming better known as a 'farm to plate' supplier, central to the distribution of the East of England's fine foods and drinks.
