This two-volume anthology has been designed as a university-level survey of French literature, offering students a selection of French poetry, prose and drama from the Middle Ages to the present day.

In most cases, authors are represented by a long selection from a major work rather than by brief extracts from various writings.

Biographical sketches of each author are included, and substantial introductions depict the historical setting for each period and point out significant literary trends. For this 4th edition, the editor has made changes that reflect the needs of teachers and students.

The helpful sujets d'etude (topic lists) of earlier editions have been reinstated, headnotes brought up to date, and selections revised.

Volume 1 now includes selections of the 16th-century woman poet Labe and Moliere's "Le Misanthrope".

Additions to Volume 2 include stories by George Sand, a "Contes et Nouvelles" section, and selections by Andre Breton, Andre Malraux, Marguerite Yourcenar, and the African writer Aime Cesaire.
