This report highlights patterns of economic and social decline in eight former coal mining communities in South Yorkshire.

Drawing on a longitudinal study, it uses indicators of human capital, social capital, environmental amenity and overall neighbourhood satisfaction to outline the changes in neighbourhood economies over time, highlighting trends towards or away from sustainability in each neighbourhood.

The book investigates the relationship between neighbourhood capital assets and self-reported well-being and the way in which housing markets generate patterns of residential segregation by levels of human capital, and the authors argue that the demand for homes has been depressed by the excess supply of new accomodation.

They conclude that neighbourhood inequality is less a reflection of differences between local labour markets and more the outcome of residential segregation caused by employment status and income whilst identifying a mistrust of neighbours and a fear of crime as key drivers of social mobility.

The research methods adopted and lessons drawn from this study are generally applicable to any area showing varying social and economic conditions. This analysis highlights key lessons for policy makers and will be of interest to regeneration practitioners, local authorities and housing providers.
