Rhodes was founded more than 2400 years ago, yet our fascination with this prosperous trading centre continues across the millennia.

One of the most beautiful cities, Rhodes had a profound influence on the Roman, and subsequent western, civilization. "Hellenistic Rhodes" introduces research by modern Europeans; the current resurgence of interest in the city-state should enable academics to salvage knowledge of the ancient world before the sites are paved over to make place for holiday retreats.

Individual chapters approach various aspects of the politics, culture and society of Rhodes and its sphere of influence from the historical, archaeological and philosophical perspectives.

These multidisciplinary essays centre on the Rhodian "demes", relations between Rhodes and the Rhodian Peraia, the marginalization of Crete in Greek thought, the role of piracy in the outbreak of the First Cretan War, and the Eastern Mediterranean Wine Trade.
