This book considers the life of Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51), who established himself as Britain's greatest royal collector between Charles I and George IV.

He first acquired many of the finest works of art in the present-day Royal Collection, but gained notoriety as "Poor Fred", known primarily for having predeceased his father, George II, after his 24 years as heir to the throne.

The late Dr. Frances Vivian's biography examines Frederick's role as an outstanding connoisseur and exhibits in detail for the first time his architectural commissions and his patronage of a wide spectrum of the arts.
