Wharram Percy : Deserted Medieval Village

Wharram Percy, near Malton in North Yorkshire, is the best-known of the Deserted Medieval Village sites.

Here the visitor can see the last remaining standing buildings: the ruined church and farm cottages nestling in a steep-sided valley.

Ancient trackways lead up onto the chalk plateau where the foundations of over 30 medieval peasant houses can be clearly seen.

For forty years archaeologists excavated the site, revealing a settlement which dates back to the Bronze Age, with Roman farms and a wealthy Anglo-Saxon estate.
