I lie awake, thinking of Max and what has become of him.

No one believes Charlie when she tells them what happened to Max at the Mill Pool.

The doctors and her mother think she is in shock; even her sympathetic brother James cannot begin to understand.

So as she recovers in the hospital bed, Charlie vows to hunt for Max alone.
