In the middle of the 1960s Cold War tensions are at their height; there is a culpable feeling that nuclear war could break out between Russia and the West.   In Britain several senior officers within the intelligence services have been exposed as long-serving spies for the Soviet Union but they have managed, nevertheless, to escape to Moscow where they have been feted and now live in comparative luxury. Their actions over the years have severely compromised the security of the United Kingdom and led to the deaths of British agents living under cover in the Soviet Block.

There may be yet more treachery lurking within the intelligence community.

Two totally unknown and unremarkable young people are persuaded by the highest ranks of the British Government to investigate how and by whom these privileged pillars of the Establishment were persuaded to work for the Soviet Union, and discover who else might have been similarly enticed.  But does the initial exercise in paper-work sleuthing harbour the prospect of physical danger to the investigating pair as the truth is slowly revealed?
