The discovery of a dead newborn baby in a barn on an Amish farm in America threatens to ruin the life of a young woman.

Circumstantial evidence indicates that the 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish girl believed to be the babys mother, is responsible for the murder.

Katie insists: she did not kill the baby. At the same time, disillusioned city advocate Ellie Hathaway flees to relatives living in the same area to clear her head.

Her aunt is related to Katie and before long Ellie reluctantly agrees to defend the young woman.

Ellie is also appointed as Katie's warden while she is on bail and has to move in with the Fishers.
