See all formats and editions

Chersonesos was a stunning city in the ancient world, a Greek colony of the 5th century, a Roman port and imperial base and a Byzantine metropolis bedecked with fine buildings and monuments.

Yet, it has also been a well kept secret due to its proximity to the centre for Russia's Black Sea fleet which has, until now, kept visitors and scholars away.

The publication of this guide to Chersonesos pre-empts a fifty-year plan by the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos and the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Texas, to explore and manage the site.

This book brings to an English-speaking audience the wonderful history of Chersonesos, its monuments and environs over a two thousand year period and discusses its position as a highly influential city both in the Mediterranean and across the whole of Eurasia.
