Lord Chesterfield's most famous work is his classic collection of Letters to His Son, advice on the model of female conduct books to his illegitimate son.

Samuel Johnson, the writer of the famous Dictionary, begged to differ and thought the advice amounted to 'teach[ing] the morals of a whore, and the manners of a dancing master.' Lord Chesterfields Letters are Stephen Bayley's favourite reading.
