The Natural History Museum took over the excavations at Westbury Cave in Somerset in 1976 to try to resolve issues raised by earlier work carried out by Michael Bishop.

These included the dating of the sequence of deposits, the presence of evidence for human occupation of the site and the position of the cave evidence within the British Pleistocene sequence.

This volume assesses the new evidence produced by excavations between 1976 and 1984: sedimentary sequence, soil micromorphology, faunal assemblages, small mammal fauna, fossil ruminants, larger carnivores, palaeoecological reconstruction, flint finds.
