Paul Days and Brian Leng are two of Sunderland AFC's most devoted followers, both historians of a club that has always ranked among the biggest in English football even if their most successful days are behind them.

They have produced a unique book, one in which they show a team photograph for every year of the club's existence since 1884.

The collection is not complete because although the club was founded in 1879 as Sunderland and District Teachers by James Allan, an Edinburgh school-teacher working in the town, no photographs exist from before 1884-85.

Also missing are photos from the First and Second World Wars when none were taken.

But otherwise the full panoply is there, from Victorians with handlebar moustaches, to the frizzy perms of the 1980s to today's multi-millionaires. Paul Days has seen more than 1,000 matches involving Sunderland AFC.

He was the major contributing author to the club's Official History published in 1999 and has since written many other football books.

He was the first editor of their official website now safc.com. Brian Leng saw his first game at Roker Park in September 1956. He has contributed to numerous SAFC-related publications including the official matchday programme and was also co-editor of the award-winning fans' magazine, The Wearside Roar.

Brian has also worked closely with the Sunderland Former Players Association since its formation and was elected as an honorary member in 2009.

He is currently editor of the SFPA web-site therokerend.com.
