DEFINITION OF ROMANCE is a fictional novel sweetly and generously decorated with humor and wit in which few scenes are moderately flavored with steaminess. Lolo, an Irish-born interracial twenty nine year-old art teacher emigrates from Northern Ireland and eventually settles in the tranquil Vale of Eden in Portland, Jamaica. She has been separated from her husband now living in Australia for seven years, and initially had no intention of finding love, especially against the background that divorce proceedings hadn't yet started.
On an eventful afternoon just three weeks in the parish, she gets a ride from a trustworthy looking fifty eight year old gentleman Lenny, both on their way to a fair. After the introductory formalities, she feels comfortable enough to have a conversation with him about their past and accepts his offer in trying to help her to gradually immerse in the 'character' of the environment.
Within few weeks the camaraderie continues cordially, but quickly develops into a friendly relationship. They soon begin to feel cozier and cozier together with the friendship blossoming into a less than discreet affair precariously perched on the receding and thinning edge of full blown lovemaking. Shortly after, passions begin to flare igniting love sparks which fly uncontrollably leading to euphoria and enraptured intimacy. With absolutely no regard for her marital status and showing not even an ounce of remorse, she becomes even more blissful when learning she's carrying twins for him.
The story also features Lolo's insulting, spiteful, overbearing and conceited mother Esmeralda who strongly opposes the 'shacking up' of her daughter and Lenny. There are several testy exchanges between her and a relatively restrained Lenny with the latter being the brunt of some very derogatory remarks made by her, much to Lolo's discomfort. In a dramatic twist however, he gets to have the last laugh, becoming very ecstatic whenever she visits and smooches Lolo.
Later on, the lovebird and the twins are afforded an expense-free one month vacation to France courtesy of three of Lenny's older siblings living in that country's most desired regions. Here, they literally breathe in the glitz, glamour, aesthetics and enchantment of what can only be described as heavenly glitter as they 'hopped' from city to city visiting famous landmarks and admiring various form of art from every era among other attractions.
But, did she finally get the divorce paving the way for marriage?
After the vacation they return to Jamaica where Lolo is greeted with a pleasant surprise: - something totally unexpected.
