This is one of a series of titles first published by Faber between 1930 and 1990, and in a style and format planned with a view to the appearance of the volumes on the bookshelf.

Written between August and December 1938, the poem is a record of MacNeice's emotional and intellectual experience during those months.

The trivia of everyday living is set against events in the world outside - the settlement in Munich and slow defeat in Spain.
