It takes as its central theme that there is not one cycle, but four separate cycles operating both outside (extrafamilial) and within (intrafamilial) the family.

The extrafamilial cycles are sociopolitical and cultural, while the intrafamilial cycles are psychological and biological.The first half of the book examines the international literature supporting each of the separate cycles.

The second half has a practical focus, highlighting multidisciplinary interventions at international, national, local and individual levels.
