This book was first published when Tolstoy's precepts were wholly unacceptable to the Church, the State, the Military and even his own family.

His message of peace, denunciation of war, protests against curtailing of freedom of speech, press and religion were ignored by Stalin, Hitler and for that matter the whole world.

But to voice such opinions in the face of stiff opposition required someone of Tolstoy's moral stature, courage and faith.

This collection of essays retranslated and republished perhaps has greater relevance today than when Tolstoy wrote them.
