Macbeth (Annotated ed)

"Macbeth", probably written in 1606, was not printed until the First Folio in 1623, and the text that survives shows signs of adaptation in the interim.

Not only is it much shorter than Shakespeare's other tragedies, the Folio text also includes material that seems not to have been written by Shakespeare, and suggests adaptation by Middleton in the period between the first performance of "Macbeth" and the First Folio.

These and other problem passages are discussed in Nicholas Brooke's introduction and annotation, and there is also a stage history of this notoriously unlucky, yet enormously popular play.
