There are probably millions of speakers of Scots in one variety or another but only 80,000 Gaelic speakers.

Government support for Gaelic is welcomed, but Scots attracts this support only on a tiny scale. Good dictionaries, glossaries and studies of language and dialect areas are essential for maintaining standards.

They are needed for work in schools, for ensuring accurate media presentation, and as a stimulus to creative writing.

Existing language centres play a vital role in maintaining the languages of Scotland.

This book surveys exciting work in progress and urges continued support for these languages for the beneift of all.
