Initial Assessment : An Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy Level

This test assesses literacy and numeracy and provides a clear indication of basic skills need. It is aligned with the National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy (2000) from Entry 1 to Level 1.

It takes 40 minutes to complete and can be administered and marked by non-specialists.

This resource is photocopiable. NIACE is aware that providers are still finding this assessment a useful tool despite the fact that it was produced some time ago in 2002 and has not been updated.

Although we are happy to continue to meet demand for this product, we would like to point out this assessment was developed by the Basic Skills Agency to align with the National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy from Entry 1 to Level 1 and it not suitable for assessing learners at pre-entry levels or at Level 2.

In order to ensure you are using this tool in a way that is suitable for your learners, we would suggest re-reading the Introductory Notes, where we strongly suggest that initial assessment activities should be followed by an appropriate diagnostic assessment.
