This study addresses contemporary geographical issues relating to Australia and New Zealand.

It takes a holistic approach in which the physical, social, economic, political and cultural dimensions of the countries are discussed.Initially the work contrasts the very different physical backgrounds between the two countries, highlighting the different environmental and resource problems that this has presented.

However, the greater part of the book concentrates on the economic and social changes brought about in Australia and New Zealand from the early 1980s and the election of two reforming governments.

Parallel issues are stressed, but a recognition of key differences is offered, in part related to the different extent of the reforms and varied economic structures.

Social issues covered include the changing status of the indigenous peoples; the character of social and ethnic differentiation; and changes in urban development.

The final chapter considers a range of geopolitical issues and their impact upon relationships between the region and the rest of the world.
