Most people are familiar with the detail relating to RMS Titanic's collision with an iceberg.

But, many maritime catastrophes claimed many more lives in more appalling circumstances.

Their stories are largely ignored or unknown. In many cases, such as the losses suffered by the Allied targeting of vessels taking part in the greatest sea evacuation in history, shame or inconvenient history is the root cause for discretion.

The passage of time is not a just cause for amnesia.

In recent times and in both war and peace doomed ships have taken far greater numbers of humans to the ocean's depths than was the Titanic's complement.

Perhaps it is a lack of ethnic empathy. It is surely more difficult to relate to the suffering of non-Europeans than to those we more readily identify with.

In this, Michael Walsh's third in the Untold Sagas of the Sea series, the former seafarer now author reveals and re-dies the world's most dreadful sea tragedies whilst paying tribute to great human valour and suffering.
