David L. Johnson went into the US Marine Corps at age 18 for World War II. His platoon still lacked many days of training before he was loaded aboard the USS Rochambeau and sent to Guam, and from there to Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima--a terrible ordeal for even a seasoned, battle-trained soldier, but for David, this was his first battle. One of 125 replacements sent in to help the 250 men of Company B ("Baker Company"), he was one of the lucky ones. Of the 375 men in Company B, 318 were killed or wounded. He was one of 57 survivors.

I Remember Iwo Jima: My Tour of Duty with the United States Marine Corps is a personal memoir of David L. Johnson's experiences in boot camp, on Guam, under fire at Iwo Jima, and his final tour of duty in China.
