In 1917, the young milliner Veronique d'Hergemont receives a clue to a secret.

While filming in Brittany, her initials V d' H were filmed on a roadside caretaker's cottage.

This reminds Veronique of her own past: in 1902 she was kidnapped by her lover Alexis Vorski.

She became pregnant and consented to marry Vorski. Her father, Sorbonne professor Antoine d'Hergemont, then renounced his daughter.

A year later, he kidnaps their child Francois and Veronique learns that the ship carrying them has sunk during a storm.

Veronique hides from Vorski, of whose death she has now also learned, for the next few years.

Veronique travels to Brittany and finds a dead man with a severed hand in the hut with the initials, next to him a prophecy: Thirty coffins for thirty victims, Four women on the cross, Stone of God that gives life or death.

She follows the signs and reaches the coast. There she is recognized by the Breton Honorine and taken to the island of Sarek, where her father and son live, who had only faked their deaths.

But since Veronique has been hiding from Vorski for the last 14 years, she could not be found.

The prophecy said that the inhabitants of the island would die.

In fact, Veronique witnesses her father being murdered by a boy whom the dying man curses as Francois.

When the other inhabitants try to escape, they fall victim to a massacre at sea.

Honorine goes mad and throws herself to her death. Veronique later finds the three Archignat sisters. She tries to help the three, but the old women die a little later on the cross, as if by uncanny forces.

Veronique confronts the forces and explores the island with her son's dog.
