This is an inter-disciplinary collection of essays which seeks to define the achievement of the academic study of sport as it has developed over the past ten to 20 years.

Each essay investigates an aspect of the importance of sport as it is now understood in the academic world.

The essays include: Lincoln Allison on "Sport and Civil Society" and "Biology, Ideology and Sport"; Richard Holt on "Sport and History"; John Hoberman on "The Concept of Doping and the Future of Sport"; Fred Inglis on "The State of Play - Sport, Capital and Happiness"; Eric Dunning on "Sport, Gender and Patriarchy in the Western Civilising Process"; Barrie Houlihan on "Sport, Globalisation and National Identity"; and Roger Philpott on "Sport in the Cinema".

The Chelsea School Research Centre Edition series originated in the advanced scholarship and research undertaken in CSRC as it consolidated and developed its national and international research networks.

It brings together state-of-the-art scholarship and research in the sociology of sport, the sport sciences, leisure studies and physical education. Each volume comprises multidisciplinary approaches to a common theme, or themed collections based upon single disciplines.

Specialist scholars from the CSRC or prominent authors from other universities and Research Centres contribute to these editions.
