The Woodcarver and the Bears is a story within a story. Peter, a country boy who loves to make carvings of woodland animals, joins his friends and neighbours at the Town Square when The Old Storyteller comes hiking down the Wolastoq River Valley on his annual storytelling tour through the province of New Brunswick. Sometimes his stories are about the past, but sometimes they seem to be about the future. Is the The Old Story Teller also a mysterious Fortune Teller? His new story is about a boy named Peter who loves to make animal carvings and has the good fortune to become the apprentice of a Master Woodcarver. When Peter grows up to also become a Master Woodcarver, he has an extraordinary experience with a bear who comes calling with a request. Thereafter, he becomes a carver of bears to his dying day, for which the bears are grateful everafter. When the tale is finished, The Old Storyteller makes his way through the audience of children sitting on the ground. As he passes, he secretly slips a special carving knife into Peter's hand. The Woodcarver and the Bears is fully illustrated with full colour linocut prints.
